cPanel AWStats

The AWStats system produces visual statistics about visitors to your site. AWStats is an open-source and free analytics application with high capability and performance. It can analyze Web (Apache and IIS) logs, Streaming logs, FTP logs, Mail Server logs and present their results graphically. It is useful for tracking: how many people visited your web page, what operating system they use, which country they came from, what they typed in the search engine to find your site, which hours your site is busiest, and many other statistical and useful information from your own server. Distributed with Open Source Code license, it is a free product that can run on Linux as well as Windows. With AWStats, you can also analyze FTP and mail server logs in addition to the web. For web log analysis, it uses NCSA combined/XLF/ELF or common/CLF log format for Apache, and W3C log format for Microsoft IIS.

Backing Up Your Sites to Yandex Disk with WHM

If your disk capacity is insufficient for backing up your sites on virtual or physical servers, or if you do not want to allocate disk space on the server for backups, you can use the cloud storage space provided by Yandex.

First, you need to create a new account at disk.yandex.com.tr. The opened account comes with 10GB disk capacity. You can increase Yandex Cloud storage space as needed, up to a maximum of 1TB.

For this operation, after logging in to WHM panel, go to Backup Configuration under the Backup menu.

After making all backup settings on the server side, for the Yandex Disk backup operation, select WebDAV from the Additional Destinations section and continue:

  • Destination Name: Any description visible to you

  • Backup Directory: Name given to the folder created on Yandex (can be left blank)

  • Remote Host: webdav.yandex.com

  • Port: 443

  • SSL Enabled: Check this

  • Remote Account Username: Yandex username

  • Remote Password: Yandex user password

  • Timeout: 60 or 80 seconds

After all operations are complete, select Save and Validate Destination to confirm. To activate the backup system immediately, connect via SSH and run:

/usr/local/cpanel/bin/backup –force

After the operation, you can check your Yandex disk.

WHM - Backup Configuration

To perform backups on our servers, we first need to configure backup settings from the Legacy Backup Configuration section under the Backup menu in WHM.

On this screen, you can configure the backup process for accounts on the server. As the name suggests, this is an older type of backup configuration. You can also perform the same operation with the new backup structure, Backup Configuration. Let’s continue with Legacy Backup Configuration.

BACKUP STATUS: With this option, you can make the backup structure active, passive, or active only for restorations.

BACKUP INTERVAL: We can select the backup interval as Daily, Weekly, or Monthly. Monthly backups also perform weekly backups. Selecting Daily performs monthly, weekly, and daily backups.

DAYS TO RUN BACKUP: We can select which days the backup will take place. For example, we marked Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

BACKUP ACCOUNTS: Here we can select whether we want to back up accounts. If disabled, only system files will be backed up.

COMPRESS ACCOUNT BACKUPS: Select enabled if you want backup files to be compressed.

BACKUP CONFIGURATION FILES: Select enabled if you want to back up configuration files.

BACKUP SQL DATABASES: Here we can choose from 3 backup types: Per Account Only, Entire MySQL Directory, or Per Account and Entire MySQL Directory.

BACKUP ACCESS LOG: Enable or disable to back up server logs.

BACKUP BANDWIDTH DATA: Enable or disable to back up bandwidth data.

BACKUP TYPE: Standard (local storage) or Remote FTP.

BACKUP DESTINATION: Specify the directory where backed-up accounts will be stored.

SELECT SPECIFIC USERS: In this section, you can turn on the accounts you want to automatically back up.

Click Save to complete the backup configuration. To activate the backup system immediately, connect via SSH and run:

/scripts/cpbackup –force

For the backup system to work properly, go to Tweak Settings in WHM Panel and set the Extra CPUs for server load value to 10 or 20 based on your server’s CPU count and power. The backup system will not run when the server load reaches this value.

Finally, to restore the backups we have taken, we can restore the relevant user from Legacy Restore Backups in WHM panel.

cPanel DNS Editor

Simple Zone Editor

This is the section where we simply edit our DNS records (A records and CNAME records). An example A record definition is shown below. As can be understood from the image, the mx.ozgurciftci.com address has been directed to the IP address 192.168.2.1 with an A record.

Advanced Zone Editor

This section allows adding and editing our DNS records with a more advanced system. We can make our A records, TXT records, SRV records, and other records from this section. An example TXT record should be made as follows.

cPanel Redirect Operations

In the cPanel control panel, you can redirect one domain to another. Two types of redirections can be made: permanent (301) and temporary (302).

We determine the redirect type. Then we select the address to redirect from the accounts added in cPanel. If we want to redirect as a directory, we specify the directory in the field across from “/”. We write the redirect destination address to complete. Before clicking Add, we determine our redirect options. If we want our website to open with or without www, we need to select the second option. At the bottom, we can see our redirected websites or delete our redirects.

cPanel Subdomain Addition Process

A subdomain / alt domain can be opened linked to a main domain and is recognized by search engines as an extension of the main domain. To explain with an example: www.example.com is a main domain. support.example.com, sales.example.com, or blog.example.com are subdomains.

From the redirect section at the bottom, you can redirect the created subdomain to a different website.

cPanel phpMyAdmin Usage

phpMyAdmin is a PHP-based interface for managing MySQL databases, much more preferred than others. It is offered for free and allows performing many tasks through a simple interface that does not require knowledge of complex SQL codes.

What Can Be Done

  • Records of operations performed can be viewed

  • Tables in the database can be created, their properties changed, deleted

  • New variables can be added to tables, their properties changed, deleted

From the database tab, you can view your existing databases. With Import and Export options, you can back up and download your database.

Import

To perform this operation, we need to create a new, empty database from the cPanel – Databases section. Select your database from the left section and then click the Import tab from the top menu. In the screen that appears, click Browse to select the database we will import from our computer. We do not make changes in the file character set, format, and compatibility type sections, and click “Go” from the bottom option to complete the operation.

Export

The “Export” option is used to back up or transfer the current database to another system. Click “Go” to download the SQL database to your computer.

cPanel Backup Creation and Upload

Control Panel Backup Process

From our cPanel, we go to the “Backup” tool in the “Files” category.

In this backup tool, you can take partial backups of your account, but we do not recommend this method. To create a full backup of your account, we click the “Download a Full Website Backup” option.

“Backup destination” determines the directory where your backup will be located after it is taken. If it stays as the home directory, your backup will appear in the files you see when you connect via FTP. If you specify an email address when you click Create Backup, you will receive an information email when the backup is complete. The backup processing time varies depending on the number of files and disk capacity. After clicking “Go Back”, you can see that the backup process has started.

From the “Downloadable Backups” section, you can download your backup to your computer. If you upload the downloaded backup to your hosting provider, they can easily restore your backup with the restore command. Your backup is also available in the FTP home directory; you can access your backup from this directory if you want to use it later.

Backup Upload & Restore Process

To perform this operation, you need SSH access. If you are receiving a standard hosting package or reseller service, SSH access is not granted to you; you just need to send your tar.gz backup taken through cPanel to your service provider. We proceed assuming you have a virtual or physical server with a cPanel control panel.

cd /home
/scripts/restorepkg cpmove-ozgurcif.tar.gz

When the operation is complete, our backup will be loaded. If you want to overwrite an existing “ozgurcif” account with an old backup:

/scripts/restorepkg cpmove-ozgurcif.tar.gz –force

We can also take a backup without logging in to cPanel:

/scripts/pkgacct ozgurcif

To delete an account via SSH:

/scripts/removeacct ozgurcif

Summary

/scripts/pkgacct username = Takes a backup of our account
/scripts/restorepkg backup.tar.gz = Restores our account backup
/scripts/removeacct username = Deletes our account

FTP Accounts

Introduction

You can add FTP accounts to access your website faster over the internet. Generally in control panels, an FTP account is automatically created for an account you add as an Addon domain. Additionally, you can add FTP accounts up to your package limit from your control panel. Below we will practice adding an FTP account and connecting through it using the cPanel control panel.

Creating an FTP Account

You need to write the name of your FTP account in the “login” field. “Domain” allows you to select when you have more than one account (addon domain). “Directory” shows the directory where your FTP account will be located. “Quota” — you can make your FTP account capacity unlimited or limit it.

When you click “Create FTP Account”, your account will appear in the FTP accounts section below. In this section, you can also configure or delete the FTP account you created.

Connecting to FTP Accounts

You can connect to FTP accounts from your control panel where you received hosting service, or using an application (FileZilla, CuteFTP), which is the most commonly used method. To connect through the application, you first need to download and install the application on your computer. After installation, when you launch the application, a screen like the following will appear. You can write your domain name or the IP address given to you in the Server field. Write your username and password, and you need to write port 21 used in the FTP protocol in the port field. With correct information, you can establish a connection, view your files, and perform operations.
